Every two years, the worlds finest athletes gather at the Olympic Games — a spectacular celebration of sporting excellence that captures the attention of billions of people around the world. However, the Games are about much more than just sport. They bring the Olympic values to life and provide a global arena for a unique combination of sport, culture, education and ceremonies.
At the Olympic Games in London 2012, about 10,500 athletes from 204 countries compete in 26 different sports, comprising 302 medal events. Whether athletes win a medal or not, they can forever call themselves Olympians. The sporting competitions are undoubtedly the central focus of the Olympic Games and participating in the Games is the ultimate goal for most athletes.

The Piano Guys are an American musical group consisting of Jon Schmidt, Steven Sharp Nelson, Paul Anderson, and Al van der Beek. They gained popularity through YouTube, where they posted piano and cello renditions of popular songs and classical music. Schmidt and Nelsons music is accompanied by professional-quality videos shot and edited by Paul Anderson and formerly by Tel Stewart. Their first four major-label albums The Piano Guys, The Piano Guys 2, A Family Christmas, and Wonders each reached number one on the Billboard New Age Albums and Classical Albums charts.

A propos de l’œuvre:
Mozart croule sous les problèmes quand il entreprend l’écriture de son Requiem en 1791. Accablé par les dettes, le maestro viennois est aussi gravement malade. Pour ajouter à son malheur, sa musique ne séduit plus, la fréquentation de ses concerts diminue.
On ne compte plus les légendes qui entourent le contexte de création de l’œuvre. Mais parmi elles, une vérité se dessine. Le commanditaire de l’œuvre serait le comte von Walsegg, désireux d’obtenir une messe des morts pour célébrer le souvenir de son épouse, tout juste disparue. La demande est faite à Mozart de manière anonyme. Le comte souhaitait en effet se faire passer pour lauteur de l’œuvre, une supercherie dont il était familier!
Épuisé, Mozart s’éteint le 5 décembre 1791 à lâge de 35 ans. S’il a probablement composé entièrement les deux premières parties de l’œuvre, l’Introïtus et le Kyrie, le reste a été repris en main par l’un de ses élèves, Franz-Xaver Süssmayr, à partir d’esquisses plus ou moins détaillées.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart est l’un des compositeurs les plus importants de l’histoire de la musique occidentale, et la figure majeure de la période du classicisme. Il fait partie avec Haydn et Beethoven de la « triade classique viennoise », incarnant l’un des trois maîtres dont l’influence a été la plus considérable sur les générations suivantes de compositeurs. Virtuose du clavecin et du violon, il connaît un succès précoce et une carrière fulgurante, en portant toutes les formes musicales existantes à un état d’accomplissement inégalé.

For this video, a new edition was prepared from the original sources, prints and manuscripts for Vivaldis music. In preparing this performing edition, we made the musicological decision that the indication for mutes in the Allegro («con Sordine») for the violins is misplaced in the original print (there is no indication in the Manchester part books), and the mutes should be in the Largo (and, importantly, not in the final movement). The mutes now provide a textural fence between the violas and the soloist. Vivaldi writes that the last movement is a rustic dance to the sound of bagpipes (“Zampogna”). So we also listened to some old style Italian bagpipes and added a few notes to the drones in Vivaldis bass part to recreate this brilliant and special sound. Here is our new version, with the muted violins in the slow movement, and the vibrant, un-muted final allegro.
